PandaLabs Q2 2014 Results: PUPs on the increase

The Q2 2014 results from PandaLabs show that Malware is still being created at record levels, roughly 15 million new samples were generated – an average of 160 000 daily.

Trojans remain the most common type of malware, accounting for 58.20% of new malware and 62.8% of infections. This figure is significantly lower compared to the previous quarter at 71.85% and 79.9%. The difference is however not due to a decline in the number of new Trojans, but rather a substantial increase in PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). In recent months there has been a notable increase in software bundlers, which install PUPs – without the user’s consent – along with the original program. According to the report PUPs account for 24.77% of infections. In most instances these programs change browser settings, display unwanted advertising or install additional programs that the user may or may not want.

Panda Security celebrates 5 years in the cloud with 1.7 billion files processed

Panda Security is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the launch of its cloud security system, Collective Intelligence, which automatically detects, scans, classifies and disinfects 99.4 percent of all new malware received every day at PandaLabs.

The system has now processed more than 1.7 billion files since its launch. The Collective Intelligence database currently occupies 25.2 TB and generates 500 GB of logs every day.

In 2007, after two years of development, Panda Security made this pioneering technology available to users and it was this system that allowed the company to offer cloud-based protection solutions to home users and companies alike. This internationally-acclaimed protection model has led the way for the rest of the industry, and offers all users a series of key benefits: investment costs reduced by 50 percent, reduced local server and desktop resource consumption, and greater overall protection in real-time.

Every day, Collective Intelligence receives more than 3 billion data requests from users of Panda solutions and processes more than 150,000 new files to determine whether or not they are malware. Currently, around 73,000 new, unique strains of malware appear every day. According to PandaLabs Q1 Report, this malware avalanche has elevated the average number of infected PCs across the globe to 35.51 percent, with China leading the ranking of most affected countries (54.25 percent of infected PCs), and followed by Taiwan (47.15 percent) and Turkey (42.75 percent).

Thanks to this system, Panda Security was the first company to bring cloud-based security solutions to the market:

  •  Panda ActiveScan, scanning from the cloud since 2007.
  • For home users, cloud scanning was implemented in the 2008 consumer solutions, and in the first antivirus designed specifically to protect from the cloud, Panda Cloud Antivirus in April 2009.
  • For businesses, cloud-based scanning was offered through Panda Cloud Protection in November 2009, delivered through the SaaS (Security-as-a-Service) model.

Panda launches Panda Cloud Office Protection version 5.05

  • The new version includes new features to simplify management and make the solution more efficient, both for corporate end-users and for channel partners and service providers

Cloud Security company Panda Security has announced the launch of version 5.05 of its cloud-based security solution, Panda Cloud Office Protection. This new version includes powerful new features to simplify management, making it more efficient, while reinforcing control over the security of corporate networks and reducing client management and maintenance tasks for channel partners and service providers. The net result is a simpler solution delivering improved margins and recurrent revenue.

According to Growth Trends in Security as a Service report published in August 2010 by Gartner analysts, “Security-as-a-service functions can result in lower costs and more-rapid implementation when applied appropriately… A security-as-a-service provider sees across the security controls of all of its customers and can often identify new threats or new vulnerabilities far faster than any individual enterprise.”

New features for corporate users

Users of the three solutions that comprise the Panda Cloud Protection integrated cloud-based security suite (Panda Cloud Office Protection, for protecting PCs and servers; Panda Cloud Email Protection, for corporate email, and Panda Cloud Internet Protection, for Web traffic) will now have single sign-on access to all three solutions through a console with complete security information about the entire company.

Panda Cloud Office Protection 5.05 now includes a powerful inventory function to identify systems not administered or protected by the solution, sending a warning to administrators so they can protect their network against any type of attack. New features and improvements include password-protected un-installation, to prevent end users from removing the protection, as well as a significant reduction in bandwidth usage thanks to the option to channel Internet communication through a specific network computer, defined by the administrator.

To further simplify the task of the security administrator, profile configurations no longer have to be created from scratch, as it is now possible to copy and edit existing profiles with a single click. Risk management has also been reinforced, through the option to run specific on-demand scans on high-risk folders and files, leveraging all the knowledge stored in Collective Intelligence and guaranteeing maximum threat detection.

New benefits for channel partners and service providers

The new Panda Cloud Office Protection 5.05 has been designed specifically to enhance the offer to channel partners selling the solutions and service providers that remotely manage their clients’ security.

Thanks to the integration of the three Panda Cloud Protection solutions, the channel can now easily identify opportunities for generating additional revenue and sales, not just through cross-selling or upselling, but also by identifying unprotected computers and servers thanks to better administrative monitoring.

Delivering security management externally as a service is now even easier, as this solution focuses on maximizing efficiency for partners. Now service providers can export existing security profiles to other clients with a single click, saving considerable time.

This new version also allows partners to resolve customer incidents effectively, immediately and remotely, as the new management console enables identification of issues without the need for logs or costly on-site visits. Similarly, specific action on clients’ networks can be identified and prioritized and service quality excellence is guaranteed through the generation of consolidated reports for the whole client database.

Panda Cloud Office Protection 5.05 is now available through channel partners and Panda’s website. Current partners and clients will be automatically updated to the new version free of charge.

Panda Security launches version 3.3.0 of Panda Cloud Email Protection

–       Includes powerful new features aimed at improving protection and further simplifying administration

–       Panda’s cloud security revenue has increased 65% with respect to 2009, exceeding market forecasts

Global IT vendor Panda Security has launched the new version 3.3.0 of Panda Cloud Email Protection. The new cloud solution is delivered as SaaS (Security-as-a-Service), and aimed at protecting and cleaning corporate email from the cloud. It includes powerful new features designed to improve protection and further simplify the task of administering the solution from the central console.

This new version allows automatic user management and data synchronization via LDAP and SMTP. It also includes powerful password control to safeguard the internal strength of the corporate network by ensuring user-created passwords are strong.

The solution also allows asynchronous downloading of logs of the action taken on each type of mail, so they can be analyzed and followed up. Security administrators can now restrict access to mail content by domain administrators, either from the mail logs or from the user panels in the centralized management console.

All current Panda Cloud Email Protection clients will be able to access the new version at no additional cost.

Cloud Security: A segment where growth outstrips market forecasts

The Panda Cloud Protection product line has grown way above the cloud-based service sector average. Revenue from these products increased 65% over the last year and now accounts for 15% of the company’s total worldwide revenue. In fact, Panda expects this figure to reach 20% by the end of 2011.

These figures are in contrast with the growth of revenue from SaaS services as a whole, which accounted for just 10% of total security service sales in 2009, with market research companies such as Infonetics predicting that the figure will not reach 20% until 2014.
